Victim and suspect in critical condition after hold-up, carjacking, and wild police chase

RICHMOND, Va. — They were on lunch break, just pumping gas, when the crime unfolded.

CBS 6 learned from sources late Monday, that the two men abducted at gunpoint and taken on a wild, violent journey Monday afternoon work less than a mile from the gas station where the scene unfolded.

Police chased the carjacked SUV throughout the city, with one of the victims forced to drive the vehicle.

“Be advised he has a weapon to the driver’s head,” crackled the police radio.

It ended with a chaotic crash in Church Hill near 25th St. and R St.

“Shots fired! Shots fired!”

Police said the suspect fired at them after shooting one of the hostages at point-blank range.

“The vehicle stopped, and the suspect sitting in the rear seat fired a single shot at our victim’s head,” said Richmond Police Chief Alfred Durham.

Police said they shot back and injured the suspect. Afterward, both the victim and suspect were taken to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police said an attempted robbery in the Fast Mart parking lot at 26th and East Main led to 45 minutes of terror.

“I’m very surprised of the brazenness,” said Irene Murphy, who lives across the street from the Fast Mart. “It’s right in the middle of the day.”

Richmond Police said after two men pumping gas told the suspect they didn’t have money. He forced them into the SUV and told them to drive to the bank.

At the Bank of America branch at 1111 East Main St., one victim was ordered to get out. He went into the bank according police and called 911.

Police arrived and ordered the man to release his hostage, but instead the vehicle drove off, weaving through city streets at 35 to 45 miles per hour.

“Hit the stinger, tires flat,” crackled the police radio.

An investigation continues, people living in the neighborhood were stunned. “This is something that causes you to reevaluate everything,” said Murphy. “But it’s just part of society nowadays.”

Police said they’re working to release information about the suspect. CBS 6 were told both the suspect and victim are in critical condition as of Monday night.
